THE HISTORY

The Spirit of Dallas Club was originally created in 1927 by local business leaders like George Bannerman Dealey, Karl Hoblitzelle and John W. Carpenter who recognized the importance of putting Dallas on the nation’s aviation map.

SpiritofDallasPlaneDuring the 1920s, the Spirit of Dallas Club made it possible for local aviator and World War I Ace Captain Bill Erwin to represent Dallas in long-distance flying competitions – including the Dole Air Derby race between Oakland, California and Honolulu, Hawaii. The Dallas Spirit was unveiled at Love Field on August 6, 1927.
