early concepts in flight
The year was 1010 AD - It is recorded that the English Monk Eilmer built a glider resembling bat wings. For stability he attached the wings to his hands and feet. This did not present a problem as he stood on the edge of the abbey tower. It is not recorded when it dawned on the monk that this did not provide anything to land with. The leap off the abbey tower resulted in a 200 yard glide and a crash landing.
